What actually helps when a veteran is struggling?
US Navy veteran and author Rob Robertson says one of the most valuable things he has found in veteran group counseling is surprisingly simple:
Veterans share tools.
Not commands.
Not guarantees.
Not “this will fix everything.”
Instead, someone says:
“This is what worked for me. Try it, change it, adapt it, or leave it behind.”
Rob explains that every veteran may be at a different point in the journey. What works for one person may not work exactly the same way for someone else—but sharing experiences can give another veteran one more option, one more perspective, or one more tool to try.
That philosophy became part of the reason Rob wrote his book, A Submariner’s Tale: After the Dolphins: The Cost of Carrying On.
In this clip from The Toosday Crüe, Rob talks about veteran community, counseling, resilience, and why sometimes helping someone starts with simply sharing what helped you.
