How do you capture the stories of female Veterans without taking ownership of them?
In this powerful clip from The MisFitNation, Susan L. Combs explains the process behind Wonder Women: The Untold Stories of Female Veterans—and why protecting each woman’s voice mattered from the beginning.
Susan interviewed each Veteran live, using the same core questions while allowing every woman’s experience to unfold differently. Those conversations covered service, boot camp, deployments, leadership, family, trauma, identity, coming home, healing, and the moments that shaped who they became.
But Susan made one decision that defined the entire project:
The stories belonged to the women.
After recording the interviews, she wrote each chapter using their own words and speech patterns as closely as possible. Then she gave the chapters back to them.
They could edit them.
They could remove something they were no longer ready to share.
They could decide what stayed private.
And in some cases, women chose to step away from the project entirely because seeing their experiences on the page was simply too painful.
Susan respected that.
That is what makes Wonder Women different.
It is not someone else interpreting the female Veteran experience.
It is women who served telling us who they were, what they lived through, and what their service meant—in their own voices.
