“Gratitude and grief do go side by side.”
For Day 6 of The MisFitNation Gratitude Challenge, Heather Martin honors her brother, Staff Sergeant John Martin, through the memories, family traditions, and love she carries forward as a Gold Star sister.
Heather begins with gratitude to God for 33 amazing years with John. She remembers mornings filled with Metallica and Slipknot, the humor they shared, and watching her brother—a former Marine who went on to serve in the Army—become a loving father to three children.
She also shares what she misses: the phone calls, the family milestones, and the chance for her children, Taylor and Brody, to know their uncle as she did.
Through those absences, Heather continues celebrating John’s life. His example as a father, leader, and mentor remains part of her family and community.
Her reflection makes room for sadness, laughter, faith, and pride in the same conversation.
